Mumbai, December 4, 2019: The Students of Markazul Ma’arif Education and Research Center, Mumbai, along with other around 300 people, cleaned the Versova Beach in Mumbai in the company of Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia and Adv. Afroz Shah, the UNEP Champion of the Earth on Wednesday morning. They collected piles of garbage for nearly three hours to restore the beach to its original look.

The area was littered with various plastic materials and wastes. During the cleaning drive, plastic waste was collected and handed over to the municipal authorized people for proper disposal.

On this occasion Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, who are on a five-day visit to India joined the hands for clean-up at Mumbai’s Versoava Beach. They were accomplished by the young lawyer and Mumbai-based environment activist Afroz Shah. Shah gave them a short presentation on the project.

Afroz Shah is best known for carrying out the world’s largest beach clean-up project voluntarily. He started cleaning up Versova beach with a small group of his friends, four years ago and later drew thousands of volunteers for his untiring conviction. MMERC has been appreciative of his work and volunteering the cause from the very beginning of his initiative by joining with students and staff members regularly at the beaches clean-up mission.

The royal couple interacted with volunteers of the Versova Beach who helped Shah make this clean-up project huge success.

The MMERC students participated in the drive today, led by Maulana Atiqur Rahman Qasmi, MMERC Branch In-charge and a senior member of Team Afroz Shah or Clean-up Versova Volunteer Group. Maulana Qasmi said, “I believe that the clean-up and purity is a continuous process and Islam preaches to carry it out on consistent basis. We, as responsible countrymen, should spread awareness towards minimizing the use of plastics in our society to protect the nature and the earth for our upcoming generations.”

The take was to pick up the plastic and other non degradable litters out from muddy and wet sands and pile at a fixed place. All the students were busy in the work meticulously in their spotless whites kurta-pajamas.

There were other groups of students including children, some aged only 7 or 8-year, from Mumbai's schools along with their teachers beside volunteers from cross sections.
It was a gathering of over 300 people including VIPs, students, volunteers, children, ordinary citizens, slum-dwellers, etc. who were provided with protective gloves to maintain hygiene while picking up the garbage.

The MMERC students, who are basically madrasa graduates (ulama) and perusing higher education under Diploma in English Language and Literature (DELL) course, expressed happiness after they saw the huge pile of plastic trash that they had pulled out. They pointed out saying, "It is everybody's responsibility to stop polluting the surroundings, and if more people come forward to help this initiative of Afroz Shah, the problem will eventually be under control.

Along with the students there were teachers too from MMERC. Maulana Aslam Javed Qasmi, Mufti Mohammad Rashid Qasmi and Maulana Muaz Muddassir Qasmi who also participated in the clean-up drive from MMERC staffers.
